UKSOL Becomes a Member of the Solar Stewardship Initiative (SSI)
/October 4, 2024 – London, UK:
UKSOL, a leading British solar panel supplier, has announced its official membership of the Solar Stewardship Initiative (SSI), a global effort aimed at promoting sustainable and responsible practices in the solar energy industry. This strategic move underscores UKSOL's commitment to environmental responsibility and transparent supply chains in the rapidly expanding renewable energy sector.
The Solar Stewardship Initiative, which includes key industry players from around the world, was launched to address environmental and ethical concerns associated with the production of solar technology. It focuses on ensuring responsible sourcing of raw materials and upholding a robust environmental, social, and governance standard across the solar value chain.
By joining SSI, UKSOL aims to further align its operations with global sustainability standards, contributing to the development of solar panels with minimal environmental impact. The company’s CEO, Andrew Moore, stated, "As the world transitions to renewable energy, it's imperative that we, as an industry, also take responsibility for how we manufacture the products that power this transition. Joining SSI represents our commitment to making solar energy not just clean, but truly sustainable."
The Initiative has received significant endorsement from the solar sector, as well as the international finance community and the UK Government, for fostering collaboration across the solar sector, with an emphasis on ethical manufacturing and climate-positive outcomes. UKSOL’s involvement marks a significant milestone for the UK-based company, solidifying its role as a key player in the global push towards sustainable energy solutions.
This partnership will likely help UKSOL expand its market presence, with many industry stakeholders increasingly prioritizing sustainable practices in their procurement decisions.
The former UK Foreign Secretary, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, explicitly acknowledged the SSI as “leading the industry’s response” to the risk of forced labour in the solar supply chain, on at least two occasions in response to parliamentary questions (May 2023, and July 2023).
